What Is IPTV and How Does It Work in 2026?

IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. Instead of receiving TV channels through a satellite dish or a cable connection, IPTV delivers TV channels and video content through your internet connection — the same way you stream YouTube or Netflix, but with live television, sports, and a massive on-demand library all in one place.

By 2026, IPTV has become the dominant way millions of people around the world watch television. The reasons are simple:

  • More channels — a good IPTV subscription gives you 10,000 to 20,000+ channels versus a few hundred on cable
  • More content — 100,000+ on-demand movies and series included
  • Better picture — 4K and 8K streams available, often better than satellite quality
  • Works on everything — your Smart TV, phone, tablet, and streaming stick all use the same subscription
  • Far cheaper — a full year of premium IPTV costs less than two months of a typical cable bill

An IPTV subscription gives you a set of credentials — either an M3U playlist URL or Xtream Codes details (server address, username, password). You enter these into an IPTV app on your device, and within seconds your full channel list loads and you can start watching.

What You Need to Get Started with IPTV

Getting started with IPTV requires just three things:

1

A compatible device

Any modern Smart TV (Samsung or LG), Amazon Firestick, Android TV box, Android phone or tablet, or iPhone/iPad. You almost certainly already own one of these.

2

An IPTV subscription

This is what provides the actual channels and content. Your subscription comes with M3U or Xtream Codes credentials. BOB IPTV plans start at $59 for 6 months — 15,000+ channels and 100K+ VOD included.

3

An IPTV app

The app is the player that loads your channels. BOB Player is the recommended app — it's free, available in all major app stores including Samsung and LG Smart TV stores, and has a clean remote-friendly interface.

Internet speed: You need at least 10 Mbps for smooth HD streaming. For 4K streams, 25 Mbps or faster is recommended. A wired Ethernet connection always gives the most stable result.

How to Set Up IPTV — Step by Step

Here is the complete process from zero to watching, on any device:

1

Choose and order your IPTV subscription

Go to bobiptvapp.com/pricing.html and choose the plan that suits you. Our most popular is the 12-month plan at $79 — that's less than $7 a month for 15,000+ live channels and a full movie library. Fill out the order form with your preferences and contact us on WhatsApp or email to complete payment.

2

Receive your credentials

Within 5–15 minutes of payment, our team sends your M3U playlist URL or Xtream Codes details (server address, username, password) via WhatsApp or email. Keep these safe — they're what activates your subscription on any device.

3

Install the BOB Player app on your device

Open the app store on your device and search for "BOB Player":

  • Samsung Smart TV: Samsung App Store → search "BOB Player" → Install
  • LG Smart TV: LG Content Store → search "BOB Player" → Install
  • Amazon Firestick: Amazon Appstore → search "BOB Player" → Download
  • Android / Android TV: Google Play → search "BOB Player" → Install
  • iPhone / iPad: Apple App Store → search "BOB Player" → Get
4

Enter your subscription credentials

Open BOB Player and select Add Playlist. Enter your credentials one of two ways:

  • M3U URL method: Paste your M3U link directly into the "Playlist URL" field
  • Xtream Codes method: Enter server address, username, and password into the Xtream Codes fields

Tap Add or Connect and your channels will load within 10–30 seconds.

You're live — start watching

Your full channel list, EPG programme guide, and VOD library are now loaded. Scroll through live TV, browse sports channels, search for a movie — everything is available instantly.

How to Watch Live TV with IPTV

Once your subscription is active and your app is configured, watching live TV is identical to using a normal TV remote. Your channels are organised into groups — Entertainment, News, Sports, Kids, International, etc. — and you can browse them exactly like flipping through channels on a cable box.

Finding Channels

Use the channel list to scroll through all available channels, or use the search function to find a specific channel by name. You can also create a Favourites list with the channels you watch most — this puts them all in one place so you don't have to scroll through 15,000 channels every time.

Channel Groups

All 15,000+ channels in your BOB IPTV subscription are sorted into groups based on country and category. Typical groups include:

  • UK channels — BBC One, BBC Two, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, Sky One, Sky Atlantic, and more
  • US channels — CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, ESPN, CNN, HBO, Showtime, and more
  • Sports channels — Sky Sports, BT Sport, beIN Sports, ESPN, DAZN, and more
  • News channels — BBC News, CNN, Sky News, Fox News, Al Jazeera, Euronews
  • International channels — Arabic, French, Spanish, German, Turkish, Italian, Polish, Indian, and more
  • Kids channels — Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, CBeebies
  • Adult channels — available as an opt-in during the order process

Using the Programme Guide (EPG)

Press the EPG or Guide button in BOB Player to open the full 7-day programme guide. This shows you what's on every channel right now, and the full schedule for the coming week. Scroll left and right through time, and up and down through channels. Press a programme to get its description and start time — or start watching it instantly if it's live.

How to Watch Live Sports with IPTV

Live sports is the single biggest reason people switch to IPTV. With a BOB IPTV subscription, you get access to every major sporting competition on the planet — simultaneously, in HD and 4K, with no blackouts and no pay-per-view fees.

How to Find a Live Sports Event

There are three ways to find and watch a live sporting event:

  1. Browse sports channels directly — go to the Sports group in your channel list and scroll through the dedicated sports channels (Sky Sports Main Event, ESPN, beIN Sports 1–10, etc.)
  2. Use the EPG — open the programme guide, filter by Sports category, and you'll see every sporting event broadcasting right now and upcoming today
  3. Use search — type the team name, league, or sport into the search box. If it's live right now on one of our channels, it will appear in the results

Pro tip: Major sports events often have multiple broadcast sources in the channel list. If one stream is buffering during a high-demand event, switch to an alternative source of the same event — it often runs on a different server with less load.

How to Watch Movies and Series on IPTV

IPTV is not just live TV. Most quality subscriptions include a full Video on Demand (VOD) library — and BOB IPTV's is one of the largest, with over 100,000 movies and series available to watch any time.

Accessing the VOD Library

In BOB Player, the VOD section is accessible from the main menu — typically labelled Movies or VOD. The library is organised by:

  • Genre — Action, Comedy, Drama, Horror, Documentary, Kids, etc.
  • Language — English, Arabic, French, Spanish, German, Turkish, and more
  • Release date — browse the latest cinema releases or classic films
  • Search — type any movie or series title and it appears instantly

Watching Series

Series are organised in a dedicated Series section, separate from movies. Tap a series to see all available seasons and episodes. BOB Player remembers your position in each series, so you pick up exactly where you left off — even if you switch devices between sessions.

Content Updates

New movies are added to the VOD library weekly — often within days of a cinema or streaming release. The library is continuously updated so there's always something new to watch.

How to Use EPG and Catch-up TV

Two features that IPTV offers that traditional streaming services can't match: a live programme guide (EPG) and the ability to go back in time and watch programmes that already aired.

EPG — Electronic Programme Guide

The EPG works exactly like the TV guide on a cable or satellite box. It shows:

  • What's on every channel right now
  • What's coming up next
  • The full schedule for the next 7 days
  • Programme descriptions and start/end times

In BOB Player, press the Guide button on your remote (or tap the EPG tab in the app) to open the full grid view. Navigate with the directional buttons — left and right moves through time, up and down moves through channels. Press OK or Enter on any programme to start watching it immediately if it's live.

Catch-up TV — Watch Anything from the Last 7 Days

Catch-up TV is one of IPTV's most powerful features. If you missed a programme — a football match, a news bulletin, a TV episode — you can go back through the EPG and play it from the beginning, as long as it aired within the last 7 days.

In the EPG, scroll backwards (left) through time to find past programmes. Programmes that have already aired and are available for catch-up are marked with a catch-up icon. Press OK to start watching from the beginning.

This means you never need to rush home for kick-off or schedule your evening around a TV show. Watch it when it suits you.

Best Devices for IPTV in 2026

IPTV works on virtually any internet-connected screen. Here's how each device ranks for the IPTV experience:

1

Samsung / LG Smart TV — Best Overall

RECOMMENDED

The best IPTV experience for most people. BOB Player installs directly from the Samsung App Store or LG Content Store — no extra hardware needed. The large screen, native remote support, and 4K capability make this the ideal setup. If you have a Samsung or LG Smart TV, this is where to start.

2

Amazon Firestick / Fire TV

The most popular standalone IPTV device. Plugs into any TV's HDMI port, costs £40–£50, and turns any TV into a streaming powerhouse. BOB Player and TiviMate both install from the Amazon Appstore. The Firestick 4K Max is the best model for IPTV use.

3

Android TV Box

Dedicated Android TV boxes (such as Nvidia Shield, Mecool, or Formuler) offer more processing power than a Firestick and run any Android app including BOB Player and TiviMate. Best for users who want maximum performance and stability.

4

Android Phone / Tablet

Great for watching on the go. Install BOB Player from Google Play, log in with your credentials, and you have access to the full channel library and VOD catalogue wherever you are. Cast to a Chromecast or Smart TV for a bigger screen.

5

iPhone / iPad

BOB Player is available on the Apple App Store for iPhone and iPad. A great option for watching during travel. Mirror to Apple TV or AirPlay to any compatible display for a larger screen experience.
